Cuba, the largest of the Caribbean islands, has over 4000 miles of sandy
beaches, bays, corral, and rocks. And also what could you expect if you were to
visit Cuba? No less than a Cuban cigar factory much like the one we have at the
village. If it weren't forbidden in the United States, maybe the Cuban cigar
would not arouse so much interest here and around the world. But cigars are a
way of life in Cuba dating to when Columbus saw the native Indians smoking
tobacco.
Alongside
the factory, you'll see the tobacco field, and depending upon what time of year
you visit, the plants will be either shooting up from the earth, entering
maturity, or ready for harvest. You'll learn first hand what it takes to grow
the finest tobacco. A mixture of fresh water, tropical sun, fertile soil, hard
work, and the finest plants are not an easy combination to manage. Cuban workers
will divulge the ins and outs of producing the famous Cuban hand rolled cigar.
The cigar making is fun to watch as you see the skill craftsmen roll the leaves
and bind them with a wrapper into the familiar tubular shape. Some will tell you
that lighting one up and puffing is in art form all in itself as it is portrayed
in the classical Hollywood movies.
Stand
outside one of the local country houses, and the Cuban docents will give you
some improvo lesson on the cha, cha, rumba, danzon, and son. Music and Cuba go
hand in hand as you dance cheek to cheek with your new found partner.
And don't forget to visit Little Havana in the Ports of Call marketplace. There,
you'll walk down tight alleys lined with cobblestones among Spanish colonial
buildings with walls built from corral rock. It is here where you can visit the
restaurant that Hemingway frequented, or step inside the world famous Tropicana
nightclub, or buy the finest tobacco products in the Western Hemisphere.
